The Purr-fect Role for Polly

In just a few weeks’ time we will be bringing the famous musical, ‘Cats’ to the stage.

The popular sung-through musical, with music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber will be a new and exciting reimagined production.

The musical will be set in the ruins of a Bombed Theatre during the Blitz of 1940s London and the Cats will be wearing stylized costumes of the period, all designed by artistic Players’ member Stephen Wilson and the Players’ creative wardrobe team.

Cats is based on the Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. The Jellicle Cats come out on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories to Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

The role of Grizabella will be played by the exceptionally talented Polly Blowers. Polly has played leading roles in many previous Lowestoft Players productions including 9 to 5 (Doralee Rose), Aspects of Love (Rose), Legally Blond (Elle Woods) and Evita (Eva Peron).

Polly will be singing one of the best known numbers from the musical “Memory”, originally sung by Elaine Page in 1981 when Cats was first taken to the stage. The song is performed in the musical as a melancholic remembrance of Grizabella’s glamorous past and a plea for acceptance.

Obviously this is a big and very well-known piece, so we asked Polly how she feels about performing it?

“I’m just so excited” Polly told us. “I love to sing, especially a big number. It will be such an honour to sing something which the legendary Elaine Page made so famous.”
